So, I didn't realize it had been two years since I posted to this blog. I'm still in retail full-time and I'm still writing...or at least trying to. I just returned from a trip to Miami for the American Black Film Festival. It's the second time I've been and when I return I feel like my dreams have been recharged.
While I was at the film festival I attended a master class with Robert Townsend about "The Ultimate Pitch". Like every other famous black filmmaker, he stressed the fact that there need to be more of us out there. More stories with our faces that relate to our community. His main point that it was time for us to give birth. If there is an idea or script that we have been hanging onto it is time to make it happen. Get it written. Get it made. Some of us have been pregnant for way too long and it's time to give birth. I'm ready. I'm ready to give birth to my first feature film. I keep talking about it. I keep dreaming about it, but now it's time to do it. I can't keep making up excuses as to why I haven't completed a project. I'm putting it in writing and forcing myself to give birth to the ideas that have been swimming around my head for way too long. I want to be a successful filmmaker. The only person stopping me is me.
I'm stepping out and I'm going to give birth.
